Dear Reader,

Hello from Taos, New Mexico. Last week I made it through Kansas, Colorado, and finally arrived in Taos a day ago. Here’s a photo I took of Pike’s Peak.

I wish the new Bob Dylan Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma was open. I would have swung down from Kansas. Still tempted…

Yesterday I visited Hotel La Fonda de Taos and asked the front desk clerk to show me D.H. Lawrence’s smutty paintings, which are hidden behind a curtain in a conference room. He asked me for $5.

Seemed like a fair trade-off.

Have been reading a biography of Lawrence over the past couple of weeks. You're cycling through the territory that I've been traveling through the last two years of Covid. If you have time and interest, the D.H. Lawrence house just north of Taos is worth a visit. Seems it is hardly visited. It is owned, managed by the U. of New Mexico, and a modest caretaker is generally there. The ponderosa pine tree that Georgia O'Keefe painted and called 'The Lawrence Tree' is still in the front yard. It is a very unpretentious place, which impacted me more than I expected. His ashes are in a small mausoleum a short hike up from the house. I hope the smoke from the fires west of Santa Fe have abated since I was in NM a week ago.
