DH Lawrence, Classes, Events
Dear Reader,
Hello from Taos, New Mexico. Last week I made it through Kansas, Colorado, and finally arrived in Taos a day ago. Here’s a photo I took of Pike’s Peak.
I wish the new Bob Dylan Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma was open. I would have swung down from Kansas. Still tempted…
Yesterday I visited Hotel La Fonda de Taos and asked the front desk clerk to show me D.H. Lawrence’s smutty paintings, which are hidden behind a curtain in a conference room. He asked me for $5.
Seemed like a fair trade-off.
Classes!
This month I am teaching Hannah Arendt’s The Origins of Totalitarianism. As of yesterday there are two spots left. You can sign-up here.
Next month join me for an exploration of loneliness here.
And in July I will be teaching Introduction to Hannah Arendt here. (This class is already filling-up.)
Event!
Join me, Paul Holdengräber, and Madeleine Thien for a conversation about the artist in isolation at the Pulitzer Museum in St. Louis on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at 6pm. The conversation is part of the Assembly Required exhibit inspired by Hannah Arendt.
This is an online event and you can sign-up here.
Wishing you a beautiful Sunday!
Until soon,
Sam
Hi, Sam--The <<Assembly Required>> link doesn't work for me. You might want to check on it.--Cheers!
Have been reading a biography of Lawrence over the past couple of weeks. You're cycling through the territory that I've been traveling through the last two years of Covid. If you have time and interest, the D.H. Lawrence house just north of Taos is worth a visit. Seems it is hardly visited. It is owned, managed by the U. of New Mexico, and a modest caretaker is generally there. The ponderosa pine tree that Georgia O'Keefe painted and called 'The Lawrence Tree' is still in the front yard. It is a very unpretentious place, which impacted me more than I expected. His ashes are in a small mausoleum a short hike up from the house. I hope the smoke from the fires west of Santa Fe have abated since I was in NM a week ago.
