And during the first summer of the pandemic I lead a Magic Mountain Book Club that was so delightful. Another pandemic project is the late Sven Walser’s deeply generous and beautiful reading of the novel which he did at the Ernst Deutsch Theater beginning in March 2020. So wonderful https://www.ernst-deutsch-theater.de/mediathek/lesung-der-zauberberg

I don’t recall if I recommended it to you but the third book in Remarque’s All Quit series, Three Comrades, is premised on the asylum theme of Magic Mountain. But Remarque brings in the war and the political unrest of the late 1920s. There’s also some auto racing—Remarque returns to these themes in his later novel Heaven Has No Favorites, which gets turned into the movie Bobby Deerfield. Three Comrades is very good and I reread it every so often.
Which audiobook version of TMM is good—there are two. I read it over the summer in undergrad (yes, I was that person) but that’s been 19 years now I guess! Plus now I understand myself as sick/disabled so it’ll be a very different read I think.
And now I’m getting an error message if I click on today’s video in browser and in the app…is it located someplace in the app that I could just navigate there?
Thank you for the shared reading of The Magic Mountain. I just finished reading Olga Tokarczuk,'s homage and reply, The Empuseum and am looking forward to rereading Mann.
Hi Sam. I’ve taught and also just read The Magic Mountain twice lately. Here’s last years syllabus (in German) https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qtDM51KZOBLbEJqFqhmF1-lnmnSaHLiZcJNZoX4oe6Q/edit
And the chapbook from the soirée here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HaFv-HXv1ZO6ZYCIPOlL1jvGtezjhzg1/view?usp=drivesdk

Ah, thank you! I will check it out. It rings a bell, but I haven't read it.
